Extensive conservation & breeding programs deal with endangered species.  Many zoos worldwide assist in some type of breeding and conservation programs to help bring more of the population to the species.  

The giant pandas are always the first to come to mind when I hear that phrase.  When the giant panda went onto the endangered species list 2 decades ago, hundreds of zoos worldwide assisted by trying to mate their pandas and loan out their pandas who were most fertile.

Sorry, don't know much about the London Zoos programs, but I bet they have a fantastic and informational website.
