  1. It is a phrase that has a contextually sensitive interpretation. Emotional detachment may be a necessity in some professional service contexts where self control is contingent for preformance quality. Psychological aberrations that transcend normal personal control to a syndromous or chronic psychological condition, e.g. schizoid personality disorder, usaully have some kind security issue at its base. The exception would be where genetic condition is suspected.

  2. someone who exists strictly through their intellect.  They don't acknowledge or act on any emotions because they deny them.  They feel nothing.

  3. An emotionally detached person is one who has difficulty connecting to his/her emotions.  They aren't very adept at identifying their emotions - often wouldn't be able to tell you what they were feeling at any given time.  Emotionally detached people also have difficulty expressing their feelings and therefore, other people feel that they are emotionally unavailable.  Many people involved with those who are emotionally detached feel uncared for.  Typically, these folks have spent a great deal of time denying their feelings (stuffing them down and not dealing with them), often as a result of being made to feel that their feelings are invalid.  These feelings (of embarassment, invalidation, or inappropriateness) can stem from caregiver stuff that took place in early childhood or from adult experiences.
