the person above me is correct. for example, in the World Series of Poker, each player had to join in with a 10,000 or so payment to enter and compete. sometimes in some games you can get a re-buyin which is when you lose your chips during a poker game but it has not ended yet. You will pay a amount equal to the inital payment or a little less and then you will be back into the game.

There are two type of poker.

The first one is tournment poker.  In tournmnet poker all players pay a buyin and a fee of about 10% the buy in.  This all goes into a prize pool. All players then receive play chips.

Blind constantly go up and players recieved a prize depending on the order they are knocked out. (Generally the top 10% or 20% of players receive a prize)

The other type is a cash or ring game where $1 represent $1 and the blinds to not rise.

Cash games reward patience where as tourments reward aggression as later in the game stealing the blinds becomes more important
