  1. A buy-in is where you pay a set amount of money (the buy-in amount) to join a tournament. Everyone at the table starts with the same amount of chips.

  2. the person above me is correct. for example, in the World Series of Poker, each player had to join in with a 10,000 or so payment to enter and compete. sometimes in some games you can get a re-buyin which is when you lose your chips during a poker game but it has not ended yet. You will pay a amount equal to the inital payment or a little less and then you will be back into the game.

  3. There are two type of poker.

The first one is tournment poker.  In tournmnet poker all players pay a buyin and a fee of about 10% the buy in.  This all goes into a prize pool. All players then receive play chips.

Blind constantly go up and players recieved a prize depending on the order they are knocked out. (Generally the top 10% or 20% of players receive a prize)

The other type is a cash or ring game where $1 represent $1 and the blinds to not rise.

Cash games reward patience where as tourments reward aggression as later in the game stealing the blinds becomes more important
