I just recently started road biking and I've read a lot about how steep hills are. Really steep hills seem to be about 8-12%. I'm trying to get a reference for how steep these hills are.

  1. Grade = rise / run

the rise of the hill divided by how far the distance covers = the grade of the incline.

  2. I would think they would be listed in degrees, like angles: 15 degrees, 30 degrees, and good luck pedaling up 60 degrees. LOL!

Just rememeber going down a hill is so much easier and faster than the ride back up. Plan your routes accordingly. ;)

I guess you could always go drive them first, and see how steep they are.

  3. Hill gradient is the same for all vehicles, 8% grade means an increase of eight feet of elevation for every hundred feet of road.

  4. Its basically the highest point of the hill and the direction of the slope.  Thats from what i know

  5. A hill gradient is a measure of rise to run, that is how far you climb over a certain distance.

For example, a 7% gradient means you climb 7 feet for every 100 feet you travel.

  6. The kind of hill that if you are riding up you want to give up before you reach the top!!!

  7. It's based on how steep the hill is.  The high the %, the steeper the grade (hill).
