I'm not looking for a cut and paste from Wikipedia here, but maybe someone who's actually been in it?

  1. It is a government-sponsored organization that sends Americans with (peaceful) skills to countries who have asked for people with those skills for development. The Americans live at a modest level in the country. They spend 3 months learning the local language, customs and history, then serve for two years. While they are called "Volunteers", they earn a (modest) salary.

A typical volunteer would teach at a secondary school, help organize community projects, give agricultural advice or help develop the tourist / artisan industry.

  2. Contact them.

They will give you some names of actual people who have volunteered.

You can call them and talk to them.
