  1. Do a Yahoo search of the ESA near you.

Anyone can become a member, but they don't give beginner lessons. You need to be a competent surfer to enter the contests.

  2. Surfammo and a_evans 8 have given you the correct information. If you want to send me an e-mail, I can help find you an instructor in Cape May or Atlantic counties, but I imagine you could do so just as well on your own.

  3. Eastern Surfing Association.  It is the largest competitive surfing association in the US.  Surfers compete by age division.  You can have coach if you want but it is not require and they won't be out there with you.  ESA is broken up into districts and surfers are ranked within their districts.  The top surfers form each region are invited to "The Easterns" at Cape Hatteras every fall.

To compete in ESA you simply pay a membership fee and then an entrance fee for each event.

There are other competitive associations such as the NSSA but it is much more active on the West Coast.

For more info visit their website: http://www.surfesa.org

  4. follow the link Surfammo gave. once you join, you can start volunteering at the beach, become friends with other ESA members--maybe catch some rides to the beach. its a super friendly organization. unfortunately, they dont do any instructing--but you may make some cool friends that could give you some pointers for free.
