  1. Originally they were used to hold up stockings.  I dont know how it bacame incorperated in a wedding or tossing it!

  2. A garter is a women's undergarment. It holds up stockings. Now that stockings have integral elastic (and have largely been replaced by tights and pantyhose), garters are most likely to serve decorative purposes.

They're thrown because most women don't want to throw their stockings anymore.

  3. like a garter belt?  they hold up the lingerie...and they look hottttt

  4. Back in the day when a garter actually had a point it was used to hold a ladies stocking in place.  Sometimes if you had money you could afford a garter belt which was more comfortable and less likely to slip down but these were usually reserved for the rich ladies.  It was seen as taboo for a lady to go out in public without gloves, stockings, a hat, dresses to the ankle, sleeves to the wrist etc. so if you were a man lucky enough to obtain a piece of womens underwear you were destined to have long and fruitful relations with women or so the story goes.  The garter was removed from the brides leg and thrown to the men bearing witness to the marriage to pass on the grooms good luck.

The point of the garter these days is to act in a way similar to the brides bouquet.  As the brides bouquet is tossed to determine the next unmarried woan to be wed the garter is tossed to determine the next unmarried man to be wed.  These days we have more reliable hoisery!

  5. It can serve as your something blue sometimes (assuming you don't have one). Its the male equivalent of the bouquet toss. The bride throws her bouquet to give the luck of marriage to the next woman. The man does the same to his friends. It also has symbolism of deflowering (sexual) . The girl who catches the bouquet is supposed to sit in the same chair it was taken off in and the guy who catches it is supposed to put it on her. Garters are also used for proms (not really followed today) @ the end of the night a girl is supposed to trade her garter for her dates bow tie as a souvenir

  6. I think that the point of the garter is to throw it.  It is tradition at weddings.

  7. The groom takes it off the bride's leg with his teeth and then it's thrown.

  8. It is the symbolism of you being taken off the market (I think), and then obviously the throwing and catching.

  9. to show off your lovely legs for the guys and for the groom to get a glimpse of what's to come

  10. Its Supposed To Be For Fun.

It's Like The Male Version Of Throwing Your Bouquet.

  11. oh god you've just reminded me I have to shave my legs lol...thanks.

I think it serves the same purpose as the bouquet. You throw the bouquet and whoever catches it is supposed to be the next to marry.

Well the garter is the same thing but for the men. Whoeve catches it is next to marry. At least thats what I've always thought...?

  12. Throwing? Where I come from, garters are used to hold you in...in other words, to give you a flat stomach and a more streamlined look. I've never tried wearing one but they sound uncomfortable. I hope this is what you're talking about...

  13. it looks hotttttt
