What was it about and also what was the importance of it?

cause all I have heard is that provinces along the border of Georgia wanted to become independent or something but Russia wanted to become allies]'

A province of Georgia, South Ossetia wanted to become part of Russia. Its citizens mainly had Russian passports.

Georgia decides to take its army there to stop them. Russia goes and defends them and goes on, as a sort of warning to Georgia and te rest of the world.
