Our Social Science class had recently watched a documentary on the Mayan culture which had existed a long time ago. The documentary said that Mayans predict correctly when an eclipse was to happen, and had also computed the number of days in a year almost too accurately, with only an approximate miss off of 6 hours. So, as these Mayans predicted the end of the world was to be on December 21/23, 2012, many had believed this, including their descendants. This was not fully proven, but some scientists say that there is no scientific basis for this and the year 2012 is not to be feared of.

When evening approaches, it will get dark, and probably cool, and the stars will appear in sky (unless it happens to be cloudy where you are), and then midnight will pass, and later in the early morning hours, we will have the Winter Solstice, then on the morning of the 22d it will get light again, and it will be a new day, just three days before Christmas.

And that's pretty much it. There is absolutely nothing particularly special about that date, except that it happens to coincide with the last day of the Mayan long cycle calendar. Gee, too bad they're not around any more so they could publish the next calendar -- maybe that would stop all this ludicrous speculation about the end of the world.
