What exercises and/or activities would best help strengthen the muscles used in kiteboarding?

I will be learning to kiteboard (also called kitesurfing and kiting) this summer and I would like a head start on readying myself to excell.

I am nervous I may not be strong enough right now. The one time I tried to water ski I could not pull myself up onto the skis. I don't want to go through that kind of disappointment again.
