What explains all waters unusual properties?

  1. Lots of reasons...

    On Earth, it is the only substance that exists in all three phases at temperatures that we experience. On another planet, it wouldn't be as unique in this regard.

    The majority of it has to do with the chemical structure of Water which is H20... two hydrogen atoms bonded with one oxygen atom.

    The two hydrogen atoms are near the top and form a "mickey mouse" sort of shape. They induce a positive charge and the bottom part, where the oxygen atom is, induces a negative charge.

    This separation of charges makes water what we call a "polar" molecule... since it is polarized with + on one end and - on the other. This quality makes water extremely attractive to itself.

    The hydrogen bonds are also extremely strong.
