  1. We call it "car rental".  If the credit card you will be using offers Collision Damage Waiver protection, don't take out anything extra. I never do when I rent (hire) an car.

However, just for your own protection take a quick walk around inspection of the vehicle before you leave their location.  Look especially close at the windshield (windscreen). Note any prior damage that might exist and make sure it is noted on your contract.

  2. We used American Express when we rent cars in other countries (Virgin Islands, Mexico, Costa Rica). For about $20 extra they have a plan that if you use their card to rent a vehicle, they'll cover the deductible and everything if damages come up.  Pretty good program overall. Thank God, we've never had to use it but it's there if we do.

Call them and check it out.

ALWAYS, visibly check the rental car out and have the agent note any, even the slightest, bit of scratching, dents, dings, paint wear, whatever. Check your mirrors, lights, flashers, turn indicators, interior for missing k***s, accessories, worn or torn material, stains, spare tire, jack and handle, fluids, tires, bumpers.  Personally, I take a good fifteen minutes to do a thorough inspection.  That way I feel much, much better knowing that when I return the vehicle and thing they try to hit me with is always covered on the original inspection form.  They don't always like it but, hey, it's your rental you're responsible for.......
