The biggest factor that affects speed is MEMORY ... picture it as a pipe ... with a bigger pipe, you can cram more stuff into the pipe at one time, hence more speed ...I'd suggest at least 4 gig of ram, its not expensive and really easy to install ..good luck!

First, your Hard Drive I/O is the most important factor for speed.  All the parts of a PC are electronic except the Hard drive and CD/DVD ROM.  Hard drives are mechanical devices, hence significantly slower than other parts.

So look for a fast hard drive first.

Second, you need to ensure you have enough RAM (memory).  If you don't, you system will page (write to hard drive) which is much slower than memory.  2 Gigs min.

Finally, Processor speed AND the number of processors.  With Dual Core and Quad Core processors, you can boost your speed more than just a faster processor.
