What factors affect samples being used for genetic analysis?

Im doing a prac on genetic analysis and throughtout the prac we had to keep the DNA samples on ice, so i know that temperature can affect the samples, but are there any other factors that can affect the samples use?

enzymes, concentration of DNA in solution, C/G content (effects the way temperature effects the DNA), salinity of the solution in which you're keeping the DNA, pH, the solvent itself
