  1. John Deere did not invent the plow, he came up with the self polishing cast steel plow which revolutionized the way early farmers could run a moldboard plow through the mucky often wet prairie soils.  There are numerous inventions that changed the way farmers were able to increase production and make life better for them at the same time.  Hydraulics have allowed for heavier equipment to be handled from the tractor seat.  Mechanical driven equipment by way of the PTO (power take-off drive) enables machinery to operate with one operator again from the tractor seat.  Science and engineers through our land grant universities have been a driving force since the latter 1800's.  Today, the computer is revolutionizing how we look at soils, feeds, machinery, satellite imagery along with the computer measures fields, tracks equipment; all of this allowing us to analyze and work towards be more efficient in our management practices.

  2. The end of World War II.  The war machine was simply turned into the agriculture machine when the war ended.

Nitrates used to make bombs were instead used to artificially fertilize crops.

Instead of tanks, tractors were built, and so on and so forth.
