  2. houses

  3. paper factories!! no joke, especially when they make colored paper cuz all the ink leaks out into the river. sucks doesnt it?

  4. Paper factories area  good answer.  However, there are other factories which can waste much more water.  Manufacturing plants that use a tempering process wastes water.  Basically metal is heated to very high temperatures, then held a high temperatures (300 degrees) for a period of time.  To keep the solution from boiling, very high concentrations of salts are added.  When the process is complete, the metal part is dropped into a bath of running water to rapidly cool the metal and rinse of all the salt for the next steps in manufacturing.

Volumes: A parts manufacturer producing small metal pieces can use 3-5 gallons per minute per machine to wash and cool the parts.  A large scale manufacturer will then have 10-30 tempering machines operating 18-24 hours per day, 350-365 days per year.  This water is then typically discharged to the storm drain or sewer, depending on the juristiction and the salts used.  So, a range of "wasted water" is 11.3 to 78.9 MILLION gallons per year for one manufacturer.  This is the reason why many manufacturing plants have their own groundwater pumps.
