   I have used a Ouija board before and found it somewhat entertaining.  However, it seems really unlikely that it can be used as a connection to something beyond the physical world.  
   
   The main theory of how it works involves something called the "ideomotor effect".  This involves subconscious movements your muscles make.  You can actually do some cool experiments on your own without a ouija board to check it out.  See the last source I listed for how to do some experiments.

   Psychologicaly, if you believe that the ouji board is real, and if you expect fear, you will think odd things are happening because of the board because you are expecting it. It's all in your head.
   
   If it is real, spirits can come through the board and posses a person. The spirits can also posses a home becasue the ouji board acts like a gate to the evil spirits. like a portal. if you burn the ouji board in hopes to get rid of the spirits, than that means you close the portal and the spiris stay in your home because the portal out is closes.
