  1. Cleaning out pee holes in box stalls!  First you have to remove the shaving on top then try and dry out the urine, then spread the sweet lime and put fresh dirt down and cover with fresh shaving...

I just HATE the amonia smell!!!

  2. Scrubbing the big water troughs in the pastures!

    Ugh I hate that!!

    It kills my back.

I would rather pick poo up all day.

  3. Well I just love being around horses so to be quite honest nothing bothers me. Maybe the horse flies. But otherwise mucking, filling water buckets, grooming, bathing its all worth the horse. When riding a horse you borrow freedom so you pay them back in these ways.

  4. Building fence. Building fence. God I hate building fence.

Edit- I would also say bucking hay too. But we broker alfalfa in our area so, it smell like money to me, thus I like it. I just can't wait till we get our hay elevator working.

  5. Getting up at 5:30 to feed the horses. No one should be up at that ungodly hour.

  6. dumping the manure! i can never seem to get the wheelbarrow up the stupid ramp and it tips over all the time!!! atleast everyone else gets a good laugh! =D

  7. Scooping dapoopy...OMG i want to invent a potty for them, or get them to do it in one spot.  I muck twice a day, 6am I'm out there and as soon as i finish one i swear i start on the next and the cleaned one looks at me and poo's. UGH!!!! This happens again at 6pm...Its never ending!!!!

  8. hay is irritating but after it's done being stacked and I go look at my horses peacefully eating in their pens...I look at that hay and I am so thankful that I am not one of those people who can't afford to feed their horse.

I HATE cleaning my pens every single day! But that is what I do to keep the fly population down and it looks nice too. The only time I get out of cleaning pens every day is if there is a thunderstorm...but then again...getting out of it for that reason means that there is just double to clean up the next day...ugh.

  9. I hate cleaning tack. e_e It is just so boring, especially saddle pads since we don't use the washing machines for those. Also picking up manure in the pastures is pretty gross during the summer, all the horses wanting to see makes it harder to move around and it gets to about 105 degrees.

Oh, and sheath cleaning. o_o; We have some very shy boys here.

  10. I don't have to think twice about that one.

My despised farm chore is cleaning harness.

My parents raised fancy driving ponies for many years and we have harness out the yin yang. Singles and doubles.

It is beautiful ,custom made stuff with brass.

Wanna talk high maintenence? You have no idea....

My personal version of Farm "h**l" is cleaning a mountain of harness with leather blacking all over your hands and clothes and face....then you have the brass....plus reassemble all the pieces...OMG ...just kill me now....

If anyones been following my previous posts...I can say without hesitation that YA has contribute to the decline and subsequent demise of my harness room and the serious lack of attention it clearly needs....

thank you for your kind attention....

    *stepping down from soap box*

Edit to Kevin: - ohhh I hear that...don't get me started on fence h**l...that runs a close second in my book.

  11. ugh well i pretty much like everything but i would say my least favorite is cleaning tack and doin the turning out and bringing in all by yourself..we have alot of horses and well some think they are escape artists so you can see not only is it difficult for me but it is amusing to all on-lookers..lol.

  12. Paper work!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Brushing, Brushing and more Brushing! When the warmer summer weather starts I cringe at the thought of brushing... When I owned only a few horses it wasn't so bad, but now that I own many the thought of shedding them all out was staggering! I broke down this year and bought two body clippers and they were the best thing I've ever purchased! Needless to say all of my horses got crew cuts within the first week! Stacking hay in the mow gets a close second. When its 100 degrees outside its 140 degrees in the mow with what seems like no air flow. Cleaning the water buckets and the outside troughs it just takes forever!  and the worst is taking full water buckets out to all 15 paddocks twice a day... heavy and quite a distance. Everything else isn't too bad... hehe:)

  14. I agree stacking hay!

  15. watering the indoor arena. our arena can get very dusty and should be watered once a week.

IT IS A VERY BORING JOB!!!

we have a big arena and it takes a LONG TIME to do and its so boring!!!!

  16. I LOVE EVERYTHING! the grooming, cleaning buckets, tack etc. sweeping stacking hay turning in and out EVERYTHING lol...EXCEPT i hate cleaning the sheath, ew...i always get someone else to do it LOL

  17. I really don't like cleaning out all of the feed buckets since it keeps me at the barn pretty late. There are always 36 buckets to do twice a day, and most of the people who divvy up the feed don't bother to put the buckets up on hooks for the horses, so I end up having to powerwash and scrub the outsides of the buckets, too. And I have to go around to all three barns to get the buckets to bring them to the wash stall to clean them, then to the "bucket board" for them to dry, then I have to stack them all up and deliver them to the feed room.

I'm kinda picky about cleaning them, though, so I know that if I don't do them, they won't get cleaned properly and attract flies.

That's something else that bothers me... people will feed the horses, but not pick up the buckets or cover them, so by the time I get to the buckets, flies are massing around them and driving the horses nuts.

Some people will tell you they hate mucking the most, but there's something Zen about picking through shavings without anyone bothering you.

  18. I hate having to inseminate them. Pretty disgusting. I like to have a couple beers before engaging in such acts.

  19. None

    They don't bother me

    Real cowgirls don't complain

  20. i don't really dislike anything to much i just don't like cleanin stalls that much

  21. Stacking hay in the heat of summer has to be up there for me.

Field mowing and maintenance is brutal as far as I'm concerned because my tractor is (ahem) vintage and doesn't have all the luxurious amenities on it like a shade cover or a cab...Nope...right out there in nature with all the sun and bugs...

I would rather be mucking or riding or having teeth pulled...

  22. cleaning out water buckets ahhh we have 30 something water buckets it takes way to long and eww some of the horses make a huge mess

  23. Dragging the rubber mats out and disinfecting the floors has to be number 1. Scrubbing buckets is probably number 2.

1crossmare - I hear you with the tractor ! Ours is a Fordson with no brakes and dodgy steering. No one can work out what is going on with the odd clouds of smoke either. Driving that tractor isn't a job -- it turns chain harrowing into an extreme sport !

  24. There really aren't any that I "hate", but some I wish I could avoid.

Don't really like putting up hay.  I have a bad back & left knee & this chore aggrivates them pretty bad.  We have stall mats, so cleaning stalls is not a huge chore & the horses are only stalled in the winter.  I guess general maintenance is a bore also.

    Good Question....

  25. Cleaning out the drains.

    Cleaning under the stall mats

Putting the hay up in 100 degree heat

Breaking ice in the heated water buckets when its -40 degrees F

    PAYING THE BILLS!

  26. Putting up hay.

    Ugh.

    Yuck.

    Blah.

But I love the look of a full barn when it's done...the earlier the better...

I didn't used to have room to store a whole winter's worth of hay early on...that is probably my favorite thing about my place.

  27. I actually don't mind doing barn chores.  I love being in the barn.  However, when I worked for this one stable, I just hated when I was the only one responsible for feeding, turning out/bringing in, and otherwise caring for 22 horses.  It was just a pain being constantly moving and feeling like I could never just stop for a rest.  When there were 2 people helping it wasn't so bad.

Let me think though.......I guess out of everything, I dislike when we have to unload hay.  Blah.  But luckily that only happens like 2-3 times a year...unfortunately it's always the HOTTEST days of the year when we wind up having to do it.

  28. i like anything, but love clipping, i dont own a horse so i do anything i can

  29. sweeping sweeping and sweeping, it seems you are always sweeping

  30. cleaning tack.........yuk Id rather clean stalls or run the bobcat.

After reading I have to say stacking hay in hot weather, my favorite is clipping, I can clip 40 horses for a show and be glad to do it.

  31. Stacking Hay!!!!
