I just bought an ex stand bred pacer, he has been retied from pacing for years. He is on Janet natural 10% but that is only in canada and I want to switch his feed. He just free choice hay which he gets a lot of in the morning he gets about 3 flakes afternoon 2 and 3 night feed too so all together in his day he gets about 8 flakes of hay. I wanted to put him on triple crown complete seeing as he is 13, pretty active, and gets riddle 4 days a week for 3 hours each time, do you think this is a good idea? if not what feed would be

thanks

  1. tripple crown compleate is fine for him.  as for hay  figure 1lb hay for 100 lbs of horse. per day  as a minimum.  move it up if they are working hard, its cold weather or you want to put weight on them.  I had a retired Stbred for 18 years,  they are the most wonderful horses willing to try and will give their hearts to you.

  2. Strategy is the most over rated feed out there!  Want to lose your horses shine?  Feed it that!

    Nutrena, M.F.A. are better feeds.

  3. I would put him on Nutriena Strategy. It is a complete feed that is well balanced and the way that it is processed, you get the same feed every purchase. It is very easy for them to digest and process. It gives them a lot of vitamins and minerals that you would normally not find in other feeds. I have used it for years with AWESOME results.

  4. correction for M & M. Purina makes Strategy, not Nutrena.

Strategy is a good feed, but it is at the bottom of the list as far as nutrition goes...and as a last resort if nothing else is available. Nutrena does makes a better feed, as well as Triple Crown, and Manna Pro, and Seminole. Strategy lacks lysine, biotin, and is not a good source of fiber, you just have to feed so much more of it than most other feeds to get the desired results because fiber is crucial for absorption of nutrients, as is vitamin c and b. Compare labelson linee if need be,that'ss what I did.

My personal favorite is Manna Pro Super Horse 14 (pellet), it also comes in a sweet feed. It has all the nutrients you need, and is a complete feed where hay is optional. Of coarse, I give my horses free choice grass in their pasture, so hayisn'tt needed until winter. However, Manna Pro is no longer available in my area, so my next choice is Nutrena XTN which is a 12% protein, or Vitality Perform 14, which is a 14%.

There is nothing wrong with the Triple Crown feed, its just not available in my area either. And Seminole is pricey, bit is also a good feed.
