  1. From what I've seen with having friends who are doctors and other medical professionals these professions seem to pay pretty well:

    Orthopedic Surgeon ($300,000 - $400,000 yr)

    Anesthesiologist ($300,000 yr +)

    Nurse Anesthetist ($120,000 average yr.)

Dentist ($150,000+ yr. depending on specialty)

    Pharmacist ($100,000 yr average)

Also remember that for some of these professions the cost of malpractice insurance and upkeep for office space and staff take a good chunk of the salary.

"Topping the list: heart transplant and cardiothoracic surgeons. Cardiothoracic surgeons have a slightly higher base pay ($435,456 versus $402,317). Heart surgeons do a little better in the bonus department, so what they take home is fractionally higher ($446,666 versus $446,255)."

  2. Orthopedic surgery. Some have been known to make 7 figures. But good luck working 60 hours a week and spending 6 years post-med school working for peanuts.

Dermatology pays high also and hours/week is about 45.

Keep in mind these are the most competitive specialties among an already highly competitive medical education process. You will have to score in the top 5% on the MCAT to get into a good med school. And then reproduce that performance on the Step 1 USMLE against all of the people who aced the MCAT.

  3. anesthesiologists are well know for making some of the biggest money as doctors... they have good hours with some on call hours and its fairly simple as a job...

the downside: this field takes a long time to get through school even for other doctors.  Once you become an anesthesiologist you must have great malpractice insurance because your butt is gonna get sued more than anyone else...its a very risky profession to intubate and put people to sleep during surgery and no room for mistakes!

As far as other medical related professions go (not including doctors) Physical Therapy is in high demand! Pay is great!
