The Agony and the Ecstasy, Michelangelo

Lust for Life (1956) Vincent van Gogh

Vincent & Theo, Vincent Van Gogh

  5. Most of the fictional accounts of artist's lives are terrible, clichéd tripe. Lust For Life about Van Gogh epitomises this genre. You really won't learn anything about are by watching them. Basquiat is the exception to the rule basically because the film was made by his friend and fellow artist Julian Schnabel.

A really great documentary film about artists talking about their own work is "Painters Painting" (1972) Director: Emile de Antonio. This focuses on the main players in US art scene at the time and is a fascinating incite into what it is to be creative. I think this is the documentary where Barnet Newman says "aesthetics is to artists what aerodynamics is to birds".

  6. "Pollock" is a GREAT one... The life of Jackson Pollock.

  7. The Art of Failure: Chuck Connelly Not For Sale  . . . (2008) an interesting look into the intense and troubled artist's life, creations and slide  (HBO special)

My Kid Could Paint That . . . (2007) the story of four-year-old Marla Olmstead and the controversy over her $15,000 abstract expressionist canvases.  Asks some good questions about "what is art?" and "what is an artist?"

An Unmarried Woman . . . . (1978 Jill Clayburg and Alan Bates) is more about a woman's journey to independence following a bad marital break-up, but the art angle and the art scene is delightful.  Check out the incredible liquid-looking sculptures one artist does, and the great "poured" canvases Bates creates!
