I need to research the period 1890-1920 - can anyone recommend any good films where the costumes, scenery and locations are fair representations of the period in the UK.

  1. ,...

  2. "Chariots of Fire"

It's about the battle between two English men to qualify for the 1924 Olympic Games. I haven't seen it but it won a best picture Oscar.

  3. Go to the library and get the 26 episodes of The Forsyte Saga made in the UK in 1967.  This TV series had a cult following when I was young, and it was the precursor of (and spawned) Masterpiece Theatre.  It is a superb adaptation of the first two trilogies (of three) that won author John Galsworthy a posthumous Nobel Prize in Literature.  It covers 1879-1926.  Stars Eric Porter, Nyree Dawn Porter (unrelated) and Susan Hampshire, who deservedly won awards for her performance as Fleur Forsyte. Each 50-minute episode is rich in the details you're looking for.  It is remarkable how the wardrobe and makeup departments help some of the characters age nearly 50 years.  They even use some rare file footage of Queen Victoria's funeral procession.

It takes place in London and out in the English countryside, except for a small portion in Georgia, USA.

(Note: there was a remake in 2002, but it isn't nearly so long).
