  1. Buy a Skylight filter or UV/Haze filter to protect the front element of your lens.

Buy a circular polarizer to darken a blue sky and to remove glare/reflections from sand, glass, water, snow and painted metal - but not polished metal. A polarizer can also enhance colors.

Heliopan, B+W, Singh-Ray, Tiffen and Hoya are all excellent brands.

  2. Hi Nicolle,   The first filter you will want for your lens is a UV filter which serves two purposes.  1.  For filtering out the UV rays going into your camera and - 2.  For protecting the front element glass of your lens.   If some unforeseen accident happen, it is so much cheaper to replace the filter than to replace the lens.   Another common filter used for the lens is the Skylight...  much for the same purposes.    For guarding against glare - use a Polarizing filter and for taking pictures in bright, bright sunlight...  use a Neutral Density filter.  There are tons more but those are the most commonly seen in a photographer's camera bag.  Hope that was helpful.   :)

  3. The only filters recommended would be a protective UV or 1a filter, and possibly a polaroid filter.  Filters for color correction aren't necessary as you can do that with the D40 or with software in the computer.

Sizewise, your 18-55mm takes a 52mm filter size.
