What fish can I get in a shallow pond.?

I recently moved into a house with a big pond which holds about 5000-6000 liters but it is only 40cm deep. I am not sure if the last owners kept fish in there as it is brightly painted with waterproof paint. It is an actual pond but I'm not sure for fish. I would like to dig deeper and use liner but I cant as it is a brick / cement pond and we cant make major changed to it but a few plants. We also cant raise it.

It sounds like the pool was made for miniture water lillies.  While the volume and depth are sufficient for adding fish, even large fish like koi, you will need to provide filters and aeration.  Warm water holds LESS oxygen than cold water.  Over feeding, or accumulation of fish waste will cause an algae bloom that can quickly turn the pond green.  You will also need to place plants, or some structures in the pond to provide shade and protection for any fish, as a shallow pond makes a great fishing spot for cranes, herons, etc.  These are all situations that can be avoided if you prepare.

Koi are great in shallow ponds.  They come in many bright colors, or mixed patterns. They are a hardy fish, and can take outdoors climants.  Make sure you use an pump to provide air in the pond, but pets stores should have everything you need, including food.

There are several kinds of fish that can be used in your case. Like koi, shubunkins, and comets. These fish all really good in shallow ponds.

Koi or gold fish or just about any fish you want as long as you can keep the water aerated and the temperature where it needs to be. The koi or gold fish will not take as much aeration but if you live where you have a long cold winter you will have to keep it warm.
