The fish keep having babies and the tank is starting to get crowded. Any suggestions on what to get to help the problem? will a crayfish do the work?

  1. Any fish that is not their mother will eat them. My suggestion is to put them in a separate small tank or something.

  2. any large fish will try to eat anything small then them...

  3. A crayfish is a rather dangerous solution because it will eat or injure the adult fish as well as the babies.  I have had a hard time finding fish to eat my culled guppy fry myself.  Some suggestions I have heard  have been bettas (male or female) dwarf gouramis, angelfish and bala sharks.

All of the bettas I have live in perfect harmony with their little guppy fry friends.  The dwarf gourami I got did the same, so I took him back to the pet shop.  I don't feel I have a tank tall enough for an angelfish, so I never tried that option and I didn't want a bala shark as I feel they're too aggressive to keep with guppies.  I do know that turtles and oscars do a fine job of eating guppies, both fry and adults, but I don't have any tanks big enough to keep either of those, either.

So far I've managed to get rid of my fry culls by giving them away (I found a neighbor with a turtle) and in a pinch I euthanize some with clove oil.  Good luck finding a solution to your overcrowding problem.

  4. I've found female bettas eat all my guppy fry born in the main tank-I've seen them hunting and they are very good! it's a shame but I save any I see and the tank is well planted so they have a chance but those girls are good

  5. You can get a crayfish but it will probably eat your bigger fish instead because the small ones are to quick and fast and they can hide very well... Just buy take out the plants or oranments and maybe the bigger fish you have in there will see them because they wont have anywhere to hide and they will eat them.

  6. Any fish that has a mouth larger than the babies will eat them.

Post an ad on your local Yahoo FreeCycle and offer the babies for free.
