Question:

What fixings should I use to fix artwork to hollow metal wall?

Hello world!

I'm doing a mural for a special needs school. It's going to be on wooden boards and it needs to be fixed to an external metal wall.

Do you know of anything to do the job? I don't have a very big budget.

Thanks for your time.

  1. Something like a RawlAnchor? Your local DIY superstore (presuming it's not a managed building) should have a range of special fixings for all types of hollow walls.

  2. a few dobs of  silicone will do the job. no expense  but remember to support the work while the silicone cures

  3. You'll have to visit a DIY shop and look at the fixings they have for thin sheets: basically it's something that goes into a hole, you insert a bolt and tighten it, and that closes it against the inside face and leaves you a thread hole to mount with. (That will make no sense until you see them and use them).

    They aren't at all expensive.

    Good luck!

  4. Use adhesive - either contact adhesive or 'no more nails'. If you use silicone remember you need to prime the back of the boards to prevent adhesive failing.

  5. I would suggest you look around for a few artists easels - ask around and then just portray the artwork on the  easels.  You should not drill into the wall - that will  cause problems in the long run.

You could  also go to your local artists' association and ask them  for advice.

    Good luck

  6. Are you allowed to drill the wall, or is this a temporary installation?

If you can drill the wall, then self-tapping screws and brackets would do the trick. If the boards can be drilled too you can go right through them and use cup washers to tidy things up. Otherwise ask at the local hardware store about concealed fixings - tell them what you want to do and they'll be more than happy to advise you.
