  1. Bring your favorite snacking material with you, including juicy fruits, such as oranges and grapes.  Beverages are a good idea too.  Decaffeinated if traveling over-night, preferably, so as to be easier to fall asleep.

Depending on the time of day you're traveling, you may find the diner and the snack bar closed.  Service is not 24 hrs.

    Have a good trip !

  2. Most Amtrak trains have a snack bar for chips and stuff as well as a dining car for full meals with waiter service.  It's pretty good (definitely beats airline food any day) but it can be a little expensive.

  3. Ever go to a 7-11 store and look at the microwave burgers, hot dogs and pizzas in the fridge?

Now have you ever been to Applebees, Chilis, TGI Fridays, that sort of thing?  (you know, a little more highbrow than Denny's).

Those are your choices on overnight Amtrak trains, at about those prices.

Or you can bring your own food.

There's a cafe car that sells the microwave junk, and then there's a nice sit down dining car ("Dinner in the diner, nothing could be finer!") which serves decent, real food.  I highly recommend the experience at least once.

I don't know if you care about food, but if you do, know that the dining car doesn't have a microwave and doesn't have a deep fryer either.

  4. You'll be traveling on Amtrak's "Crescent", a well-known train.  It has both a dining car and a lounge car.  In the dining car you can get a full meal, while the lounge car will have a snack bar.  The choice of items in the dining car will depend upon the time of day (breakfast, lunch, or dinner).  Items will generally be cooked to order for you.  There will be at least one vegetarian item, if case you don't eat meat.  Prices will be somewhat expensive: about $10 to $20 for a full meal.  The items from the snack bar in the lounge car will be things like sandwiches, burgers, sodas, and chips, and will likely cost you less than $10.
