My friends husbands dad passed away, family and friends are getting together for lunch at a veterans hall after the service. I need ideas as to what food or drinks I should take to help out. My friend is way to busy for me to call her and bug her with this question. I'm sure they would appreciate anything but with a low budget I'm just not sure what to take. It's for about 50 people or so. Thanks for all ideas!!!!

  1. A crock pot full of mini-wienies and bbq sauce is cheap, easy and will feed a crowd.

  2. Most funerals I've been to have had little finger food things.  Make different kinds of sandwiches and cut them into quarters.  Have some cookies or little dessert things.  For a drink maybe have a bowl of non-alcoholic fruit punch.

  3. Pasta salad, cold cut platters, mini club sandwiches, juices, soda, water, fruit/veggies platter(s), cheese crackers type platters etc etc....a lil something to appeal to everyone

  4. tator salad.. or chicken and rice or green bean casserole or  mac and cheese...bucket of chicken... fruit salad or  some type of pie...they are inexpensive enough that you can just buy one already made...or make your own....big pot of home made mashed potatoes...everyone loves potatoes...or some chicken and dumplings...can you tell I am from the south? LOL!  jug of sweet tea...some soft drinks or rolls...:0)

  5. You could bring a few different dishes. if you want to bring drinks I would ask if they are doing cans or bottles though. Or just bring two different cases of soda. But, I would say a few dishes of different foods. A lot of times now people buy them at their local deli and simply place them into their own dishes at home. Like a pasta dish, maybe a specialty bread, and or a potato dish or something like that. Depending on where you live and your culture.

  6. sandwiches

  7. A few different choices...

First budget helper is to remember that your thing doesn't have to feed everyone in attendance, so don't worry about providing massive quantities. Not everyone will choose your thing, and people don't take meal sized portions either. They nibble. A family sized portion of a dish from you, added to everyone else's...will be fine. I always forget this!

    OK some good choices.

Drinks: can of coffee, canister of lemonade mix, box of family sized tea bags. Jar of creamer, bag of sugar, sweetner packets. Any or all.

You can prepare a cake or a pan of brownies.

Baby carrots, bag of salad, apples, a watermelon, or something else light and healthy. People sitting around eating donated food for days...will appreciate it.

If you are taking food to the home, some easy prep things might be good: A roll of cookie dough or some mac and cheeses, a box of cereal, a gallon of milk, a gallon of ice cream.

You can also bring household things if there are houseguests staying with the family...paper plates, napkins, toilet paper, cleaning wipes, a yahtzee game or deck of cards or a kid's DVD...anything to help with the overflow of people in the house.

  8. make a big bowl of pasta salad with italian dressing and some shredded cheese.  That shouldn't be more than $10.  Get 2 boxes of pasta, 2 bottles of cheap dressing and a bag of shredded cheese.

  9. Fried chicken is always good...if you have a Wal-Mart near by they have good chicken and it is reasonably priced.  Also, veggie dishes are good.  Cakes, pies, cupcakes...

    You are very thoughtful.

  10. chicken sausage!no ?

  11. I have attended more than my fair share of funerals over the years. For some reason it seems customary to serve dry and sweet sherry as people arrive. Trays of sandwiches are nearly all you need, no party foods, ham, tinned salmon, egg, cheese etc. Also provide fruit bowls apples, oranges, grapes etc. Sombre respect should be the keynote so no one should expect filo prawns or mini duck wraps.

  12. Comfort food is the way to go.

Mac and Cheese, Baked Beans, Lasagna, Brownies, Cookies, Chili, BBQ Chicken (baked), pasta salad, cold cutts, pickles, olives, Shepard's Pie, Chicken Brocc Casserole

For drink serve coffee, tea, bottled water, soda

Good luck and way to help a friend.

  13. Scones

Cut them in half, add butter then stawberry jam and top of with a slice of fresh strawberry or cream. They are stunning and everyone is sure to like them.

    A variety of sandwiches

  14. chicken pot pie. put lots of potatoes as extenders.comfort fooooddd... or simple mac and cheese. muffins.

  15. its simple you cant go wrong with lamingtons and aspagrus in bread with a bit of mayo
