  1. Has the cat had any bloodwork or a urinalysis done?  I ask because older cats that are starting to lose weight can be suffering from a disease condition.  Kidney disease and hyperthyroidism are two very common ones.  To give him kitten food or a random grocery-store brand could be detrimental to his health and could shorten his life.  If he hasn't had any bloodwork done and hasn't had his urine checked, I would recommend doing that before adjusting his diet.  At the very minimum, have his urine checked.  It's inexpensive and will give you an idea of how his kidneys are functioning.

If he's healthy, I would recommend a canned food made for Senior cats (7 years of age or above).  The good ones, Science Diet and Pro Plan.

  2. kitten food has extra vitamins and things like cholesterol that will help an underweight cat put on the right kind of weight, and not just fat. mix it with your cats regular food.

  3. Get like the meatier cat foods that have more meat than vegetables in them like Bill Jac kitten food it has a lot of vitamins and chicken which have a lot of protein in them so your cat can gain some weight.

  4. meow mix, chefs blend, friskies, purina pro... cat chow.. there's a lot of good names that would make your cat gain weight, especially wet food.. 9 lives, fancy feast, friskies..

  5. Go to Pet-Co,  get Wellness Kitten Food, It is excellent, I use to feed Royal Canin, but Wellness it much much better, it has tons on protein and no by products, no corn gluten, wheat gluten or Soy, My cats have stopped shedding and their poo doesn't hardly smell, I have orientals and Siamese, they are hard to keep weight on them because they are very thin cats anyway, try a bag of this I swear you will see a difference after the first bag, I DID

  6. Cat breeders will know the answer very quickly for this problem - Missing Link Feline Supplement.  It is all natural and we use it for pregnant and nursing cats as well as cats who won't eat because they are ill.  The results are very easy to see when you feed it to a nursing Queen - her kittens gain more weight and are more lively within a matter of days.

I have a friend who feeds it to her senior cat and it keeps the weight on him and really improves his coat.  I would mix it in some Turkey or Chicken baby food (cats love it) and hand feed it to your cat.

Missing Link Feline Formula is available at Petsmart or online for aroung $8 for a 6 oz bag which should last 3 months.  Here are the daily amounts to feed depending on your cat's ideal weight: Kittens up to 5 lbs. : 1/4 teaspoon. 5 to 9 lbs.: 1/2 teaspoon. 10 to 12 lbs. : 3/4 teaspoon. Over 12 lbs. : 1 teaspoon.

  7. Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health

Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.

Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrdiant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms

The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process.  Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in

Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.

You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all.    The best food for cats does not contain any grains at all.

Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies  whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food.

Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bp...

    Please read about cat nutrition.

Vetinarian diets  The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza.  http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spring04...

  8. Anything healthy and NOT filled with useless fillers. Fillers have useless calories, and your cat need more calories, not less.

I recommend varying the diet with a constant rotation of accepted canned foods that your cat enjoys. If you do this, and allow your cat the same assortment they would have in nature when eating mice, bugs, birds and rabbits, your cats’ digestive system won't be so sensitive and you won't have to run around looking for a specific brand when your store is out. You will have a nice variety to choose from instead.

Canned foods I recommend for your rotation:

  9. just pick a good brand - look at the ingredients and pick one that has meat instead of lots of grains. it is better for them.

This is the kind my cat eats. It is a little more expensive but he likes it and doesn't barf. I get it at Petsmart instead of the grocery store

Let them eat what they want. That's my cat's problem. He LOVES to eat so he's gotten fat.

  10. they make high calorie vitamins that you can buy at your local pet store and they work well or you can find some high calorie food that you will also probably find at the pet store
