What foods are and aren't good for you?

I'm trying to eat healthier and get my dad to agree with me on eating healthier. Certain things I know are bad for you, but when I tell him "you're killing yourself and me" he tells me "no I'm not, you're being dramatic". I know what I'm talking about most of the time, but I can't back myself up on exactly why the food is going to kill us.

So here's what I need to know:

1. I need to know which foods are good for you and what part of your body it helps.

2. I need to know which foods are bad for you and what effects they will have on you.

3. I need to know what combinations can effect your health in bad or good ways.

  1. Sorry it's long but it's well worth reading.

1.Spinach-The iron is good for you because it makes red blood cells

carry oxygen to the rest of your body.

Oranges, anything with vitamin C-Helps your immune system so you can fight infections and diseases.

Cheese, milk, yogurt, etc.-The calcium helps your bones become strong.

Whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread-The carbohydrates give you energy and eating whole wheat are a lot healthier than eating white bread or sugar for energy

Meat, beans, tofu-The protein helps your muscles become strong.

Seafood such as cod, halibut, and salmon-They have omega 3 fatty acids which can help protect you against heart disease when paired with a healthy diet.*

2.Anything with trans fats are terrible for you.  Trans fats clog your arteries and can lead to heart attacks, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and many other horrifying diseases.  Trans fat always increase bad cholesterol.

Too much saturated fats or any type of fat is unhealthy also.

Sugar is also bad in medium/large-large amounts.  Too much sugar can cause diabetes.

Also foods which too much cholesterol are bad for you.

If I were you I would consume scarce amounts of cookies, donuts, fried foods, cakes, ice creams, pies, candies, chocolates, high cholesterol sea foods, large amounts of eggs, red meats, sodas, high fructose fruit juices, foods which large portions of cheese or creams, and other high calorie and unhealthy foods.

    3. I didn't really understand what you were asking for but here are some healthy, simpe and still good tastings recipes.

    Portebello Mushroom Sandwiches

    Serving size- 2 sandwiches

    Ingredients:

    2-4 Portebello Mushrooms

4 pieces of whole wheat bread or 2 whole wheat rolls

    2 slices of mozzerella cheese

Simply stack the mushrooms and cheese on the bread and heat.

    Spinach Pasta with Salmon

    Ingredients:

    Whole wheat pasta

    1 medium can of spinach

1/4 container of alfredo pasta sauce

    2 chopped tomatoes

    1-2 filets of Wild Salmon

Cook the pasta, add the sauce, spinach, and tomatoes.  Add salt and pepper if needed.

Cook the salmon any way you want (just make sure you don't add too much oil) and serve.

*Crab, lobster, shrimp, and other seafoods have omega 3's yet they are high in cholesterol so they wouldn't be my main choice on seafood.

Also, use olive oil instead of lard or vegetable oil because it's much healthier and in my opinion tastes better too!

Good luck on eating healthier! :)
