Question:

What foods are better for digestive health?

My stomach is often upset and rather than trying to avoid certain foods (because there seem to be so many of them that it is impossible to identify them all) I am curious to know if there are any foods that are supposed to be good for over-all digestive health, and if so, what are they? I know about yogurt already but is there anything else? Also are there any vitamins that are particularly helpful with this?

(I'm a vegetarian, by the way, but I eat cheese, fish & eggs.)

  1. Fruit is best to aid digestion..  Banana is high in potassium which the digestion process needs.. it also needs acid to help break down the foods.    Fish is not a vegetarian item as it doesn't grow from the ground and it also is a meat..  So you aren't vegetarian if you eat meat..  you can call yourself a near vegetarian..   that means almost vegetarian!    I'm almost a vegan but I eat eggs so I'm not a vegan!   There are some vegetarians that don't eat any meat but eat eggs and wrongly call themself one!   I use to make the error of calling myself a vegetarian when I gave up all meat except fish!  The mercury scare  got me to give up fish!  It is estimatedOver 50% of fish in the markets  contains mercury.. sometime small amount that's not much and sometime alot in the fish!  The mercury often comes from outboard motorboats!

  2. I have read that citrus kind of fruits like grapefruit, lemon, oranges and others will help ease your digestion. Fiber rich food will do too. Also, try putting a bit more garlic on what you cook. It is believed to be a good digestive cleaner or antiseptic.

  3. Well, indigestion can be caused by a few things.

First, it could very well be the dairy, fish or eggs.  Dairy especially is well known for this.

Other wise, highly cooked and highly processed foods (and spicy etc.) are very difficult to digest and indigestion results.  Because they are dead foods and lacking enzymes etc. that allow it to digest properly.

Also, combining foods improperly will cause indigestion, such as eating fruit with other foods.  See, different foods require different digestive conditions, so if you eat such foods together, both end up digesting poorly.

  4. High fiber containing foods are good. It may upset your stomach when switching to a high fiber diet at first, but after a couple days, your body should get used to it and it should regulate your digestive system. If your problem is constipation, it will help with that and if you have the opposite problem, it should help with that too.

  5. raw foods that still contain enzymes, raw dairy if you can find it, papaya and pineapple.  You might want to look into a digestive enzyme to take just before meals, that should help.  I have the same affliction.  Don't eat too much fiber or complicated stuff: stay away from oatmeal/wheat/corn/soy/beans.... in favor of egg whites, brown rice... try peeling your fruit ESPECIALLy apples, but I steer clear of those in favor of grapefruit, figs, plums, nectarines, peaches and other softer fruits... good luck!
