As we all know, Ramadan is approaching. Since i am an american convert, i know nothing about what is normally served during ramadan in saudi. I know my husband doesnt expect me to cook arabic food, but i want to try and make him proud of one really good meal. Anyone out there know atleast the names of some food served? or even better a website with atleast the basics of the recipes for some good arabic food? (i can handle it being in arabic, but english is easier for me.)

and yeah, i do kabsia, i am just not that good at it.

  1. check this arabic site:

    Good luck

  2. kabsa, grape leafes  and sambosa

  3. Im growing up in the U . S  and  always had homecooked foods especially arabic food , try dessert , you can go get a tray of BAKLAVA which is a amazing dessert you coould find at stores like SAFEWAY , COSTCO . LUCKY , and possibly other big stores like this . GOOOD LUCK !

  4. okay in diffrent cities/countrues people eat diffrent things.

but in jeddah, saudi arabia where im from we eat sanbosa, soup, beens, dates,....

  5. well to break a fast.. (think of morning breakfast after you get up).. anything light on the stomach.. you wouldnt eat steak for your morning meal...

its the same concept.. light nutricious foods..

as for Saudis.. the tradition is to break the fast with a few dates, some juice or water, then go pray, then after a few minutes, you can take more food.. like a light nutricious soup.. they make lentil soup, wheat soups, and oat soups here a lot for the first evening meals.. Rice or Kabsa isnt served usually for the breaking of the fast cause its too heavy at that point.. They do serve a smattering of finger foods like samboosa (the little half moon or triangle stuffed pastries).. they serve easily digestible stuff like any macaroni casserolles, (beshamel is what they call it here).. and some serve harees (a pureed mash of boiled wheat berries and meat).. some serve a dish called Thareed.. which is a very  light thin crackly bread sheet broken up in the bottom of a huge bowl, then ladle a vegetable soup over the bread.. (the bread then soaks up the liquid making it mushy).. the vegetables are placed around the top.. and some cooks might use lamb or chicken also.. But meat isnt to be the main focus at a breakfast cause its too heavy... They save the meat for the 2nd meal which is usually served around 4 to 5 hours later...

now having said all this.. me coming from both a Saudi and american background.. I serve anything and everything at my break fast table... Sometimes I do the arabic meal, sometimes a more American style... doesnt matter.. as long as its light and nutricious and filled with watery foods to replenish your dehydration (here in this heat, you need it)..

goodluck! and may Allah bless your fast! ^_^

I have some sites online saved. here are a few you can browse through to get ideas from

are you in SaudiArabia? if so go to Jarir bookstore and ask for the Kuwait foods cookbook series.. There are 4 series to the set and they have excellent easy (english) recipes for arabic/saudi cooking and a few smattering of other middle eastern dishes.. I learned how to cook some stuff from that cookbook.

  6. I'm from Egypt , I was leaving with my father In KSA since I was a child , In Ramadan they start their food by dates , then they go to pray Maghrib (Dawn pray) , after praying they return to drink soap , and eat some light food like salads , then they go another time to pray Eshaa (Night pray) , then they return to eat their essential meal which contains of many items like Samposek (minced meat with vegetables and may be cheese which is rolled in thin pastry called Golash and then fried in oil) also they like to ate Kabsa (Filipino Rice with some special spices and tomato and sheep or goat meat) , after they finish eating they like to drink coffee (special Saudi coffee with cardamom "in Arabic Habahan" it has a very special taste and odor they ate dates during drinking it to give it good taste) , this coffee is good for digestion .

I forget to say that all Arabian nations in Ramadan like to eat more sweats like "Konafa & Kataif" you can buy it from the markets and put beans , Nuts , raisins & coconuts inside it , then you but it in the oven for Konafa , & fried it in oil for Kataif , then you but it in pre-prepaired concentrated Lemon drink with concentrated sugar (we call it in Arabic "Sharbat")

Hope you good luck with Good saudian food .
