  1. soy milk is another alternative

  2. It depends on your level of sensitivity to dairy.  But generally Ice cream, sour cream, yogurt, cottage cheese, butter, cream, milk chocolate, whipped cream, creme fresh, buttermilk, any dairy based dips such as ranch, blue cheese, dill dip, spinach dip, french onion dip, etc. Cream based soups, alot of Indian food has a milk or a cream based sauce, alfredo sauce, bechamel sauce, or any cream or milk based gravies.

  3. The obvious: milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, cream, ice cream.  Some have lower lactose content, so it depends on your intolerance level.

Not so obvious: lactose if used a sweetener in some foods, particularly candy.  Milk chocolate can be a double whammy: it contains milk for the chocolate plus it may contain extra lactose as a "sugar."

Lactose is also sometimes used as a binder if some foods and if some medications.

In other words, if you're highly sensitive, you need to check labels to see if lactose is used as a sweetener or a binder.

Milk is used is a great many things in various forms.  Many packaged products may contain milk, whey, curds, or other dairy ingredients.

Outside of that, you're not going to find lactose in many other things.  Fruits, vegetables, and grains contain no lactose.  This means that soy, rice, and almond milks contain no lactose.

Be aware that there are other ingredients in milk, proteins and fats, that some people may be allergic or intolerant to.  Milk protein (cassein) appears in a great many things.  In some cases, it's not even labeled as dairy.  It contains no lactose, but may be problematic for some.  Worse, it's often used to make things creamy or thick for people that can't digest lactose.  For example, Coffee Mate is labeled "non-dairy" and "lactose free," but it contains cassein.

  4. If you're lactose intolerant you can still eat the food they say you can't eat. There's this stuff called Lactaid. You find it where the antacids are in the store. There are two forms that they sell it in, chewable tablet (which tastes like vanilla) or the caplet. You take it with your first bit of dairy and you can eat al the dairy you want, if you plan on eating dairy after 30 minutes of the first dose, then just take another dose. I usually take 2 tablets if I know I'm gonna drink alot of milk, like 2 big glasses. It helps I swear. I am lactose intolerant and I love milk and Lactaid is the only way I can enjoy it with out getting sick.

  5. Chocolate :(

  6. dairy products:

    milk

    ice cream

    yogurt

    chocolate

    cheese

  7. I'm also lactose-intolerant:) .... Dairy products (milk, cheese, cream) will bother you, but most lactose-intolerant people CAN eat yogurt (I think the natural bacteria in there is the reason).   Vanilla soy-milk and Lactaid milk are good substitutes, and Coffee-mate liquid creamer.  Breyer's makes a wonderful lactose-free vanilla bean ice cream, and you CAN eat sorbets (not sherbet, which has dairy).   I don't know why that person said you couldn't eat chocolate;  that's ridiculous:) ... There are soy cheeses, which taste exactly like processed cheese, in the refrigerated section of the produce department (or near the tofu).  There are some Lactaid pills you can take before eating dairy, but I don't think they work very well.....
