  1. Uhh... your digestive system NEEDS to be acidic in order to digest food. Lowered acid in your stomach can lead to a greater risk of digestive tract infection (the gastric lumen is a natural disinfectant - when you have low or no acid the effectiveness of this disinfectant is decreased).

The acid/alkaline thing is a myth. The "diet" works because the eating plan in general is good - with the alkaline food diet there's a huge focus on vegetables and grains within the eating plan. This is why you lose weight and feel better, but you should be eating heaps of veggies anyway, diet or no diet.

Another sign that the acid/alkaline diet is a myth - I just noticed that the first answerer up there says that lemon and lime are alkaline foods. I checked online for pH levels of these and lemon juice has a pH of 2.3 and lime has a pH of 2. FYI, a pH of 7 is considered neutral (e.g. water), < 7 acidic and > 7 alkaline. I googled the alkaline diet a bit more and apparently these turn "alkaline" once it metabolises in the body. This is definitely not true.

  2. As far as i know, the alkaline foods can be in various categories such as vegetables, fruits and nut & seed. For the example of vegetables that have alkaline element are asparagus, artichoke, cabbage, lettuce, onion, broccoli, cucumber and many others. The example for fruits are grapefruit, banana, lemon, tomato and watermelon. The example for nut and seed are almonds, pumpkin, sunflower, sesame and flax.
