I want to make a film for a film competition

I want to know if my parents old video camera will be acceptable but in order to do that I need to know what format it is in.

Its not a fancy digital one but you know those old vhs ones that they use to have in your face every birthday party? THAT ONE

What format does that record?

  1. That's VHS!  It probably doesn't matter what format you're shooting in though - once you've finished editing you can render it to whatever format is required.

  2. just pop open the tape holder and see if a VHS tape drops in. all the other formats were smaller cassettes, ie video 8, VHS-C, Beta....

  3. VHS and VHS-C is analog VHS. To transfer to a computer, you need the AV cable and an Analog/Digital bridge like those from Pinnacles (Dazzle, uses USB) or Canopus (uses Firewire).

  4. yup, VHS is the format.
