PQ: What do detectives do and how do they solve cases

Is a large amount of science strongly recommended for this type of work (because I took applied science a.k.a; double award science), salary, hours, work conditions, pros, cons ect.

  1. join the police and if your any good you'll advance to the cid and be trained by them when you've had enough you could then set up by yourself and you'll have the contacts to make a better job ,I new an ex detective Sergeant who'd retired at 52 and got his full pension but went back to work at police headquarters in the intelligence unit that might appeal---good luck with whatever you decide to do

  2. In the UK you need to be a police officer before you can become a detective. That if you want to be police detective. A private detective you don't need any qualification for this.

  3. Firstly you have to join the police. After undertaking a 2 year probationary period 'in uniform' you can apply for a trainee investigators (TI) post in order to train as detective. In reality It takes most people several years at least to evidence the skills needed to become TI.

If you get the post you then sit a national exam based on law and procedure. If you pass this and show your ability as a trainee then you become a qualified 'detective'. No formal qualifications are needed just the right thought process.

A detective constable is the same rank as a police constable.

As a result they earn the same money working (in theory) a 40 hour week. In reality many detectives work much longer hours than this and can be kept on duty or be called in from home when serious incidents occur. The role that was once 'in demand' has, if you believe police publications struggled to recruit suitable candidates in recent years. In most areas CID are said said to be running understaffed. The salary for a constable starts at approx £21k rising to approx £32k
