  2. Yob pretty much covered it, I can only add that I have run into DVD players that will read single layer 4.7 GB DVDR both + and -, but refuse to play anything on a dual layer 8.5 GB DVDR.

  3. There is no single format which is guaranteed to play on any DVD player. Don't use DVD rewritable discs and that leaves you with DVD+r or DVD-r and of the two DVD+r will be playable on most (but not all) DVD players.

    To improve the chances of compatibility you should also record at a low speed and of course use high quality discs (look for taiyo yuden).
