What format is a dvd?

hi evry1 well basically ive got a .avi file on my laptop i want to convert it to a format which works on my dvd player firstly what is the format and where can i get a free converter that will do the job because i dont want watermarks or anything like that just a free conversion software that will allow me to convert my file and then burn it to my dvd and then be able to play on my dvdplayer
