What format should i convert my videos to?

i have some .asf videos that are taking up too much room. What format should i convert to? i dont really care too much about the quality, i just want them a smaller size. And can you tell me some software (free preferably or a crack) that would be good for converting this

try importing to XP or Vista movie maker (free)... you have several choices to downgrade your video.
