  3. freedom of speech, infringe the freedom of the press, limit the right to peaceably assemble, or limit the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

  4. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

    — The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

So, the First Amendment protects freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly and petition.

  5. The First Amendment grants the freedoms of religion, speech, press, and assembly-freedoms to do something-and protection from government intrusion.

The original text of the Constitution generated some opposition on the ground that it did not include adequate guarantees of civil liberties. In response, the First Amendment, along with the rest of the Bill of Rights, was adopted on December 15, 1791.

The four freedoms were based on the concerns of the founding fathers arising from treatment by the King of England and the iterplay between state and federal rights.

Those rights continue to be important today as we exercise the freedom of speech, press, religion, and freedom from governmental intrusion.
