What free program can i use to convert ogm & mkv files?

i downloaded some videos and to came in ogm and ssa files, what are ssa files? anyways ppl keep giving me retarded *** programs when i ask... i need some that work, what programs can convert the files to mpeg or avi?

I'm not sure what those particular file formats are, but I use video lan to convert audio and video files. Takes a bit to get use to. I had to experiment with it some.
