What freeware can I use to disable background programs?

Question

I want to improve the running speed of my PC, a mate told me about loads of programs that I could disable to improve my operation.

However, i dont want to disable any critical programs that'll stop the PC from running.

Any advice pls

With windows go to Start > Run > then type msconfig and click ok.

Got to the services tab. You can deselect programs you don't want running in the background. If you don't know what it is don't deselect it. That could be bad.

If you have Vista, use Windows Defender to check your startup programs, it gives a lot more info than MSConfig.
