My other singlespeed bicycle has an 18-44 gearing setup, and I want to have the same ratio on another bicycle that I am building. The chainset I have has fifty-two teeth, so what size freewheel should go with it to make an equal ratio?

  1. ok gear ratios  divde number of teeth on large chainwheel by number of teeth on freewheel will give ratio of around 2.4:1 therefore the answer to your question would be 22 teeth to give same ratio

  2. I keep coming up with 21

  3. For future use, divide the chainring by the rear cog. 44/18=2.444.

This means 52/x=2.444 x=21.276. A 21 tooth rear will do great.

EDIT: I was thinking about this some more. Do you realize that the 44/18 setup will be easier to pedal, right? Going to a 52T chainring transfers the torque and will make it harder to pedal even with the same ratio.
