  1. Stone fruit, apple, peach, pear, almond & cherry are prone to this. Some cultivars are more prone to this than others especially in peaches.

    Fruit doubling is the term used in cases of twins in fruit. It can occur in response to stress. High heat and/or dry soil can be factors. It happens when the flower buds are forming in late summer or fall, long before fertilization in the next season. Testing showed peaches can go from 9% doubled to over 20% doubled with drought stress while the tree is setting flower buds.

    Oranges also do this in fact the navel orange is selectively grown for this quality. In 1820 a mutant orange with a second smaller fruit embedded in the outer fruit opposite the stem was found. These fruit are nearly seedless and tend to be very large so were kept and grafted despite the number of malformed fruit that occur. This orange is also called Washington, Riverside or Bahia navel orange.
