  1. They run on exactly the same stuff as a normal jet engine can run on - normally "Aviation Turbine Fuel", a kerosene based fuel. The most common of type of turbine fuel is "Jet A-1" (sometimes referrred to as "F-35").

There are lots of other specifications like Jet-A, JP-4, JP-5, etc, which usually only involve different additives in the fuel, like icing inhibitors, or slightly different specifications.

Believe it or not, in an "emergency" jet engines can also run on gasoline - similar to your car, but not the other way round. A gasoline engine running on turbine fuel will quickly fail due to detonation and overheating, if it runs at all. Jet engines can run gasoline for a short while as they run very hot on this type of fuel and any more than a few hours can do lasting damage to the jet engine. The fuel system also may need to be flushed after using it.

As other answerers have stated, a jet/turboprop engine can technically run on heaps of different types of fuel, but anything other than aviation turbine fuel risks doing damage depending on the type and how long the engine has been running on it. Not something you want to risk too often in the air!

  2. jet a, and for some special engines jet b.

  3. Jet A fuel

  4. if it'll burn, it'll run.

  5. Jet A, of course.

  6. Uh, jet fuel...100 LL in an emergency but it can only do that for a little bit.

  7. Well the russian engines can run on diesel or heating oil.

  8. kerosene

  9. John B. pretty much sums it up.  If it'll burn it'll run.  On the Garrett engines (metroliner is what I fly) the recommended fuel is Jet A.  The engines, and any other civilian turboprop engine I've ever come across or heard of, is built to run on Jet A.  There is, however, a section of the POH where it goes through every other type of 'approved' fuel that can be run through these engines and for how long.  Example:  100LL can be run through for a max of 10 hours (I believe) and this time must be documented in the MX. logs.  Pretty much any other type of fuel you could come up with has a limitation.  Honestly... you throw enough Bacardi 151 in 'er... provided you can get the engines running... she'll stay running.  Turboprop engines are darn near bullet proof... you get them running and they'll keep running until they run out of gas or you shut them down.

  10. Kerosene or gasoline.
