The thymus is the secondary lymphoid tissue where pre-Tcells from the bone marrow migrate and are matured , differentiated and positively and negatively selected for ability to interact with foreign peptides when they are presented to the T cell in the context of self MHC. Without a thymus for performing these functions, the cellular immunity aspect of the immune response would be decimated. Memory cells would not be possible. NO help could be given to other iimune cells ( no CD4 T cells ) and there would be no killing of viruses

    ( except by natural killer cells ) because the cytotoxic T cell ( CD8s ) would not be there either. The symptomology would resemble late stage AIDS because that disease causes failure of the CD4 T cell ..the conductor of the immune symphony.


  2. The thymus is the site of maturation and development of T lymphocytes. Without T lymphocytes the immune system would not function properly.
