  1. Food. That is first and foremost, shelter and excretion come in at a close second.  The first states around in Mesopotamia, farming was the thing that allowed people to be stationary (before that everybody was a nomad), then farming advanced little by little and one person farming could support multiple other people going into other endeavors, which allowed social stratification. Ancient Egypt could survive because their climate was still relatively warm compared to the other places, and could still support a decent amount of people.

  2. Sanitation

    Plagues/Diseases

    Adequate food storage facilities

    Irrigation

    Housing

    Military protection

Eventually they all collapsed...That's what civilizations do...

  3. americas greatest old civilizations started in south america with the inca and aztec tribes, but communal living was brought to the new world after the last ice age, or shortly before. Egypt survived due to the river nile and a fertile land coupled with strong leadership.A drought hurt much of that part of the world, but it was not a complete collapse as the groups in different nations survived. Egypt just had advantages.
