What funding is available for someone after a major surgery until they are healed enough to work again?

I have a friend that is going in for back surgery and he won't beable to work from now till the surgery and then until he's healed after. Is there any government or otherwise funding available that he could apply for? He lives in Alberta, Canada.

In the US we have disability insurance that we pay in as a deduction from each paycheck.  Do you not have something like that in Canada?

hookin or begging till it's healed. then, work as a wal-mart greeter.

Contact the EI office and see if there's anything they may provide.  Some employers also provide benefits that will cover a person when they're off sick for a long period of time.
