Question:

What furniture should I put in the new house?

We are moving into a new house in December. It is a resale home and everything is ready for us to move in - walls painted, upgrades galore, etc. We are very excited. We have lots of older furniture from our previous houses which weren't as nice. Since this is the first home that we've bought, should we splurge on new expensive furniture, or just get Ikea stuff until we can afford super nice expensive furniture? We only need a few pieces - sofa for the great room, sideboard for the kitchen, and a few accent chairs for the great room.

What would you do: (1) buy expensive furniture and be in debt for a little while; (2) buy the Ikea stuff that's not the best but still nice AND affordable????

  1. If you buy the cheap stuff, chances are you will be stuck with it for longer than you think. I am sure since this is your first home,  you will find a lot of other things to spend your money on.

  2. I would buy something in between. Now that you have a house you want your furnishings to reflect that you've grown up & you're not living like a nomad with disposable furniture anymore. Conversely, you're on a budget + styles & tastes change over the years so you don't want to shell out a whole lot of $$ on pieces that you might not like in 5-10 years.

Typically I go by the "splurge, spend, save" principal. Splurge on items that are important to the overall look of your home - like new flooring, a river rock fireplace, granite counters, etc. Spend on important items that will get a lot of use like your bed, sofa & dining table. Save on things that are stylish but are prices affordably - coffee/end tables, rugs, nightstands, dressers, bookshelves...

I actually work for company that sells home decor. Most of it is in the middle price range. But you can also get some really great bargains on our outlet site:
