  2. CARROM:

Carrom or carroms is a family of tabletop games sharing a similarity in that their mechanics lie somewhere between billiards and table shuffleboard. The game has various other names around the world, including carrum, carum, karam, karom, karum, and Indian (or Nepalese) finger billiards. It is also called Fatta in Punjabi.

    Origins:

The origins of carrom are uncertain. India, China, Yemen, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and North Africa have all been suggested as potential regions of origin. In the West, where the game is often similar to billiards-type games, it may have independently developed in several cases as a mixture of billiards and shuffleboard.

The origins of Carrom are uncertain. Western sources suggest that the game is of Indian origin while some Indian sources claim the game is of British origin, But from us it is of indian Origin i.e. southern India. Yemen, Ethopia and North Africa are also suggested as potential regions of origin

The Word Carrom Is derived from word "CANON" means a shot. These are, to say the least, ‘obscure’. The earliest mention of a similar game is when a game with some similarities was found in an Abyssinian Tomb approx 2000 years old (Indo-Iranian Culture). How this game actually spread to the Indian sub-continent is unknown.

In Greek writings there appears to be a game that confirms to the basic design of ‘Carrom’. * Some say the word ‘Carrom’ originates in Timor, South East Asia. * ‘Carrom’ means Malabar Coast in Portuguese. ‘Malabar Coast’ being the spice trading coast in India. * In Chinese ‘Carrom’ means ‘Healthy Game’, which it most certainly is.

In the late 18th century the word ‘Carrom’ was changed to ‘Cannon’ in the English-speaking world and there used to be a game called ‘Carrom Billiards’ not so long ago.

Billiards, snooker, 8-ball, pool and bar billiards all originate from Carrom hence the similarities.

In Denmark a similar game called ‘Bob’ is played with cues rather than fingers.

In China also a similar game is played with cues.

In Fiji the similar game is called Vindi Vindi.

    In Israel, Szhe Szhe.

In Mexico and Java a similar game using bottle tops is played hence the different striking action by Mexicans.

In Canada the game Crokinole is similar.

    The Board:

The game is played on a board of lacquered plywood, normally with a 29 inch (74 cm) square playing surface. The edges of the playing surface are bounded by bumpers of wood. Instead of the balls of billiards games, carrom uses disks. The object of the game is to strike or flick with a finger a comparatively heavy disk called a "striker" such that it contacts lighter object disks called "carrom-men" and propels them into one of four corner pockets.
